So Amy, some quick questions……….
When and why did you begin writing?
I’ve always loved to write but had to put it on the backburner while I was in college. It’s my escape from reality where anything can happen. I started writing again about a year ago and now I can’t stop.
What inspired you to write your first book?
A few of my friends and I started a book club. We fell in love with the New Adult Romance genre and books like Fifty Shades of Grey and Beautiful Disaster. Eventually, we ran out of book to read so I decided to write one for us. Blissful Tragedy was born.
How did you come up with the title?
When I thought about what it would be like to date a touring musician and front man of a band, I knew it would be bittersweet. The excitement of watching your rock god rule the stage (and rule you afterwards) is almost magical, but having to deal with half-naked woman throwing themselves at him right in front of you is like living in the 7th level of hell. A tragic form of Bliss, which is how I came up with Blissful Tragedy.
Did you learn anything from writing your first book and what was it?
I learned so much it would take me hours to tell you everything. For starters, the easiest part is writing the book. I didn’t realize all of the hard work, sweat, and tears that go into marketing and promoting. I also learned it’s worth all the work. I love sharing my stories with the world and wouldn’t trade it.
Who designs your covers?
Viola Estrella is the cover artist for 5 Prince Publishing
Are there messages in your novels that you want your readers to grasp?
Nothing in life is perfect and anything worthwhile takes risk and work.
How much of your books are realistic?
I think my book is a realistic depiction of how a relationship with a rocker would fair out. Unfortunately, I’ve never dated a rock star (not for lack of trying).
Are the experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
Some of the characters are based on my friends and some things in the book mimic my own life (like places I’d like to visit and the song we walked into at our wedding).
What books have most influenced your life most?
I grew up reading Judy Blume books so she was a huge influence on my reading and writing. I also am a huge fan of Stephen King, but I fell in love with romance novels while I was in college and now I’m hooked.
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
Jamie McGuire. After reading her blogs, she inspired me to write for publication. She basically encourages anyone who’s who wants to write a book to give it shot. Like it’s not an impossible dream.
Who is your favourite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?
How can I pick just one? I love Jamie McGuire, S.C. Stephens, Tina Reber, Abby Glines, E.L. James, and Nora Roberts. The thing that really strikes me is their ability to suck me into their books as if I’m living them through my own eyes. The range of emotion I feel in amazing.
What book are you reading now?
The Fault in Our Stars
Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
I recently met a blogger online named Olivia Howe who is only 19 years old and just finished her second novel. I can’t wait to read it. She’s always posting awesome excerpts on Beautifully Broken Book Blog.
What are your current projects?
I’ve just finished my first draft of my new novel (currently called Wrecked). Here’s a taste:
Eighteen year old Layla Anderson has it all. She’s queen bee of her high school, head cheerleader, and dates the captain of the football team, but all her popularity won’t help expunge her tarnished record and help her win the scholarship to a prestigious culinary school she’s been vying for. When she’s partnered up with mysterious bad-boy Chase Cooper in traffic school she vows to steer clear of him and the trouble that seems to follow. Then tragedy strikes, pulling her from her perfect life and plunging her into a downward spiral. Can the most unlikely person turn into her hero or will his secret destroy it all? How can you pick up the pieces when your whole life’s been wrecked?
Do you have any advice for other writers?
Don’t give up and always follow your dreams.
Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
I am so appreciative of every one of my readers. I love it when they send me email and messages sharing my thoughts. It’s amazing to meet others who love my story as much as I do. I’m blessed to have such wonderful people come into my life. Thank you so much for supporting me 🙂
