So Melissa some quick questions………
When did you begin writing?
From a very early age, I was an avid reader, but I didn’t start jotting down my own stories until about fifth grade. As a teen, I wrote some short stories and poems, and once a play. My first serious attempt at fiction began in my twenties and continued off and on for a number of years.
Who designs your covers?
The fabulous Farah Evers Designs for my Indie works. Wild Rose Press has some very talented cover artists as well.
Who is your favourite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?
Mark Twain was a huge childhood favourite. I spent hours reading his books over and over again.
What book are you reading now?
I’m slowly working my way through Save the Cat by Blake Snyder. It’s about screen writing but there is some incredibly useful craft information that applies to the writing craft in general.
Where did you get the idea for your current work?
As a paranormal fantasy buff, I’m familiar with a great deal of werewolf lore. Some authors go with a cursed/bitten origin story. Others choose to attribute the cause to genetic reasons, such as a disease or inherited condition.
I wanted to come up with a unique and memorable origin story, so I turned to mythology. Wolves play an important role in Norse mythology, so there was synergy in combining the two. According to the myths, the Trickster God, Loki, sired a great wolf named Fenrir who is destined to kill Odin during the final days of the world.
The lore presented such a fantastic opportunity for storytelling. I envisioned a race of shifters born from Fenrir’s line. Approximately a millennium ago, they were driven from the Norselands and came to the shores of North America. For many generations, they co-existed with Native American people but also attempted to preserve their heritage. Victoria and her people live in the modern world while still following many ancient Viking traditions.
What is your writing routine?
I do the majority of my writing during the day while the kids are in school because it is the only uninterrupted block of time when I’m alone. However, I don’t confine myself to writing only within that short window. I write early in the morning and late at night—whenever I’m able to carve out a chunk of time.
What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Don’t give up!
Oh, and keep reading and writing.
Definitely, don’t give up.
